The Boycott on Fanaa

The boycott on Fanaa in Gujarath and on everything connected with Aamir Khan frightens me. Are we becoming a fascist country? I remember the days of emergency when many of us became silent for our safety.. Shri Advani himself said,'"We were asked to bend but we crawled'" Shri Modi is stated to have said he will provide police protection if the theatre owners wish to show the film, Faana. The Congress party in Gujerath competing with Modi for popular support perhaps feels ashamed of the excess of hatred and intolerance and has expressed their disagreement with the Sangha Parivar. This again looks like face-saving and one feels saddened by this that a great mass organization with a great history of Gandhian heritage can only make a feeble noise against intolerance. Aamir Khan has just acted like an honorable citizen of the country who is concerned with the resettlement of the poor. Medha Patkar's satyagraha reminded me of the old Vaikom satyagraha of Gandhiji. That satyagraha was only in support of the law of the land that ever one has a right of the common road running in front of the temple and you cant bar some castes from walking on the road during worship of God in the temple. Similarly Medhaji was upholding the judgement of the Supreme Court that the dam should be heightened only after the poor villagers and tribes who are losing their livelihood are resettled. It is a matter of great sorrow for many of us that the Honorable court does not take its own decision seriously. I would say we would all be committing a crime against our Constitution if we let the poor go uncared for in our desire to improve our lives. I feel embarrassed to write such truisms. Aamir Khan's film is a work of art. It is not a piece of propaganda. All creative works are not just personal statements of the authors. Even if you hate the author the work deserves our attention as it exists in the public domain. Some people may feel pathologically so hateful of the author of the film that they may not like to see the film.. They have a right not to see the film. But they have no right to prevent others from viewing the film. But the people in Gujerath who are intolerant are also powerful; they have the State Power implicitly behind them. Therefore they are able to force their decision on the entire public of the sate. And the Sangh Parivar is an expert in spreading mass hysteria. No other political party in India can match the sangh parivar in this art of creating mass hysteria. People who are sane and civilized do not know how to fight the tactics employed by the fascist forces. This is a frightening situation and an indication of things to come. The Sangh Parivar is making India a second rate country in the world. I feel ashamed as an Indian that we are letting communalists grow in this country.Development without a heart has blinded all our political parties and the Sangh Parivar seems the biggest gainer of this heartless development agenda.
